We are seeking a dynamic individual to lead Breakthrough Sacramento’s academic programming, which currently serves more than 250 students in grades 7-12.

What is Breakthrough Sacramento? 

BSAC helps motivated students, from under-resourced schools, prepare for college with the support of older students passionate about education. Founded in 1994 as Summerbridge Sacramento, BSAC has demonstrated long-standing success leading more than 90% of its students on to become the first in their families to attend college. Additionally, BSAC is a pre-professional training program for diverse college students interested in becoming educators. 

Position Description: 

Assistant to the Programs Manager (APM) aids with the delivery of BSAC’s programmatic elements for its middle and high school students: school-year academics, seminars, internships, and experiential field trips. Additionally, the ASM supports the Executive Director with advancement projects and initiatives that support the overall institutional success of Breakthrough. 

Strategic Vision/Leadership: 

  • Ensure consistently high-quality college preparatory programming at all levels 

  • Adopt enhancements to improve the breadth, depth, and reach of the program to increase student access and Teaching Interns support 

  • Participate in the National Breakthrough Collaborative, including adopting applicable curriculum resources 

  • Model the core principles and values of BSAC 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

Program Assistant Duties 

  • Contribute to planning of the program calendar/schedules for school-year activities and events 

  • Work closely with the BSAC Programs Manager to create a schedule of social emotional learning and academic skills seminars and help run these seminars, as needed 

  • Assist with the planning of school-year Super Saturday events and help facilitate 

  • Participate in preparation for the Summer Breakthrough Academy, including Teaching Intern, Dean, Mentor Teacher, and student selection, curriculum selection, training, and summer schedules 

  • Assists the Programs Manager in the collection of student data, including surveys and check-in calls/emails/texts 

  • Create an environment for a successful and productive community of learners who value high-expectations, perseverance, leadership, and collaboration 

  • Collaborate with Breakthrough Collaborative and Breakthrough affiliates to align program to national standards and benchmarks 

  • Ensures strategic collaboration with appropriate internal and external personnel to accomplish organizational goals and objectives as directed by the Programs Manager. 

  • Facilitate recruitment presentations at our elementary school partners and other school sites 

  • Assist with summer staff recruitment 

  • Update and maintain all social media platforms on a weekly basis using all our handles (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Linkedin) 

Outreach/Communication 

  • Contribute content for student newsletters 

  • Prepare correspondence and other written materials for Programs Manager requiring specialized knowledge 

Leadership/Mentoring 

  • Lead social emotional learning programming 

  • Serve as resource for the Programs Manager, Middle School, and High School Manager 

  • Participate in the training of summer Teaching Interns as mentors, teachers, and future leaders 

Skills and Knowledge: 

  • Strong understanding of issues affecting educational equity and access to higher education as well as an appreciation of stages of adolescence from 10 to 23 years of age. 

  • Familiarity with and ability to implement college-preparatory curricula 

  • Poised communicator and motivator; able to write and speak persuasively and to build and empower an effective team 

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team with exceptional initiative and judgment 

  • Proven organizational skills, including the ability to initiate and follow through on ideas and projects, both independently and collaboratively 

  • Strategic and respectful "bridge builder" able to foster partnerships with people of diverse socio-economic, cultural, and political backgrounds 

  • Willingness and ability to work flexible hours, including select evenings and weekends 

  • Responsible for the oversight of the summer Teaching Intern experience, including assuring adequate training, support from Mentor Teachers, the development of appropriate and effective teaching habits, and providing encouragement and leadership.

Qualifications and Experience 

Applicants must have experience 

  • working with BSAC’s target population, preferably in education. 

  • building relationships with individuals, foundations, and corporations. 

  • building, empowering, and supporting a high-performing team; and fostering partnerships with people from diverse backgrounds and institutions. 

Level of Supervision: Low 

BSAC Assistant Program Manager must be able to work with minimal supervision, balancing the needs of multiple team members across departments. 

Supervisory Responsibilities: 

Moderate level of during summer programming 

Education and Experience: 

  • Education: four-year baccalaureate degree recommended 

  • Breakthrough experience or 1-3 years of experience in education or a related field preferred 

Physical Requirements: 

  • Ability to work at a computer workstation for periods up to four hours at a time and for up to eight hours per day for up to five consecutive days 

  • Ability to speak on the telephone for a total of up to three hours per day 

  • Ability to sit for up to three hours without breaks at meetings 

  • Ability to lift 10 pounds

Compensation: 

Commensurate with experience. 

Terms of Employment 

Work Hours: Part-time, year-round employment, including 9 intensive weeks in summer
